Bumble is in advanced talks to go private in a deal worth about $1 billion, Reuters reported on Monday, October 12, 2026. Ithaca Holdings is the prospective buyer. The talks come as Bumble tries to win back users with AI. Neither company has confirmed a deal. Both declined to comment. Still, Bumble shares surged roughly 50% to $3.80 that Monday, their biggest one-day percentage gain on record. A $1 billion price tag for a $14 billion debut Founded by Whitney Wolfe Herd in 2014, Bumble went public in 2021 at a valuation of about $14 billion. Five years later, the proposed price tells a very different story. Paolo Pescatore, an analyst for PP Foresight, said the potential agreement is proof of Bumble’s difficulties, adding that: Going private looks less like a strategic masterstroke and more like an admission that Bumble’s current strategy is failing. The numbers a buyer would inherit Bumble’s Q2 results indicate the reasons for the investors’ concerns. Its revenue declined by 15.2% year-over-year to $210.5 million. The number of paying users also dropped by 16.4% to 3.2 million. Bumble reported a net loss of $127.9 million of which $169.3 million were impairment charges, even though the adjusted EBITDA represented $72.9 million. The slide started earlier. In 2025, the company registered a near 10% drop in revenue that amounted to approximately $966 million, while its paying user base declined by more than 11% to approximately 3.7 million. Meanwhile, net income increased by 36% to $171 million. Tinder also showed signs of improvement. Daily active users dropped by only 4% year-on-year, which was the smallest decline in the last 10 quarters. Hinge’s revenue has increased by 22%. But Match’s results suggest Bumble’s issues range beyond just the users getting bored with swiping. Kroger to cut 3,000 corporate jobs weeks after unveiling AI strategy Ibiam Wayas | usagoldmines.com

Kroger is planning to eliminate approximately 3,000 corporate jobs over the next three years, which will affect roughly 37% of the company’s overall corporate jobs of about 8,200. The cuts was announced by Kroger CEO Greg Foran on October 12, 2026, as reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The timing raises questions. Just 20 days earlier, Kroger unveiled its AI strategy. But the company has not linked the cuts to AI. Foran instead pointed to a simpler corporate structure and more investment in store employees.

Flat sales behind the streamlining

In the second quarter of 2026, Kroger reported $34.6 billion in sales, an improvement from $33.9 billion over the same period a year earlier. However, identical sales excluding fuel gained only 0.2%, trailing far behind the 3.4% increase in 2025. Adjusted e-commerce sales surged by 20%, as stated by the company in its SEC filing.

In its earnings report dated September 11, 2026, Kroger’s Foran admitted the challenge:

“Improving sales momentum remains a top priority.”

He also expressed confidence in Kroger’s plan to become “America’s favorite grocer.”

The company lowered its full-year identical-sales growth forecast from 1.0%–2.0% to 0.2%–0.8%. Investors will hear more at its October 20 meeting.

What the AI plan actually covers

At GroceryShop 2026, a global retail and brand event, Kroger Chief Digital Officer Yael Cosset shared his vision on using AI in forecasting, customizing shopping experiences, and store operations.

In pursuit of that vision, Kroger provided AI-training for more than 400,000 associates. It has also been developing agents that will help the frontline staff manage their work.

In the company’s announcement on September 22, Cosset emphasized that:

“The goal is not autonomy everywhere.”

She elaborated that AI must assist the workforce but leave the dominant role of human discretion in operation.

What the research says about AI and jobs

Research suggests exercising caution before attributing layoffs to AI.

A Stanford policy brief revealed that the increase in unemployment since 2022 in the case of workers exposed to AI increases by 0.77 percentage points, as compared to 0.85 percentage points for workers who are less exposed to AI. This shows that there is little evidence of job losses attributed to AI.

According to a Ramp-Revelio Labs study, companies that are heavily using AI have seen an increase in their employee count by 10.2% during the last two years, including a 12% increase in entry level jobs. However, companies that are mildly adopting AI have not seen any noticeable growth. However, that does not in any way prove that adoption of AI has created those jobs.

A review done by Springer found that AI tends to change the jobs significantly while creating a greater pay gap between skills. Meanwhile, a workforce report from PwC points to growing concerns regarding job security as well as training requirements.

Kroger to Cut 3,000 Jobs: Sales Slowdown, AI Adoption and Employment Trends

How it compares with the tech layoffs

Cryptopolitan previously reported job cuts at Amazon, LinkedIn and Cisco amid growing AI investments.

Kroger’s situation differs. Its reductions span three years, with savings intended for stores rather than explicitly funding AI infrastructure.

The stakes extend beyond Kroger. Infosys values global retail at $29.7 trillion and estimates agentic commerce could influence up to $1 trillion in US retail revenue by 2030.

Deloitte’s survey of 330 retail executives also identifies AI as a major industry force in 2026.

The challenge for Kroger is more tangible: do fewer corporate positions and more spending on stores lead to better sales and customer service? Without clarification on the role of AI in the restructuring, it would be premature to assume this technology is to blame for the cuts.
