Previous looks at the DCU’s upcoming HBO Max series, Lanterns, have been met with a little bit of an eyebrow raise. Fans felt like the newest Green Lantern-centric entry into the DCU didn’t really live up to the superhero side, though it definitely evoked True Detective. But our latest Lanterns teaser trailer quells those concerns. Although it still carries the dark, symbolic, and intense energy of True Detective, it now moves the action out of this world and into orbit, showing how incredible the Green Lantern powers truly are. (Yes, they do let you create counterfeit money out of glowing green light.) This new Lanterns teaser trailer absolutely gives us superhero and we’re excited to see how Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan will fit into the DCU at large. Helping us frame what we see, the logline for Lanterns, released alongside its teaser trailer, shares the following: “The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.“
Again, the True Detective comparisons are rife here. We absolutely get that darkly humorous, buddy-cop energy from this look at the show. And the teaser also implies we’ll see quite a bit of commentary on today’s America in the series. But this Lanterns teaser trailer reminds us that heroic powers and galactic stakes are absolutely in play. The feeling of superhero action absolutely comes to life here. We’ll see how the show balances both energies. But, for now, we have to say, we’re hooked.
This Lanterns teaser trailer also confirms that Laura Linney has joined the already star-studded cast of Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones. We don’t yet know who Linney will play in this Green Lantern series, but we’re excited to find out. We also get to see Nathan Fillion appear briefly in the Lanterns trailer as Guy Gardner. And we KNOW that can only serve to annoy our heroes, but make for a good time. Strap in, this one is going to be good.
Lanterns will release on August 16 on HBO Max.
