Lenovo’s IdeaPad Vibe is here to answer the question: What am I going to buy as a cheap, productive PC this holiday?

If you can spare $699.99, Lenovo has the answer: Either 14-inch or 15-inch Vibe laptops, with attractive colorways, available initially with either first-gen Snapdragon X processors or the new AMD Ryzen AI 400 series processors. Intel processors will be supported at a later date, Lenovo said, but the company didn’t provide specifics.

Remember, Lenovo has three brands: ThinkPad business notebooks; ThinkBooks, aimed more at a small business owner; and IdeaPads, Lenovo’s consumer brand for laptops. With skyrocketing prices across the board, Lenovo has to offer a consumer model that’s priced attractively.

The problem, of course, is that only the base configuration will carry that $699 price tag; how quickly prices climb when you add different configurations isn’t known. (A Lenovo spokesman suggested that $1,500 would be on the higher end of the price spectrum.)

To be honest, I’m not particularly sold on either platform. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X processor is the budget offering from its first-generation lineup, as opposed to the X2 chips that Qualcomm announced last fall and are shipping now. Qualcomm’s problem here is branding: Early discussions of the Snapdragon X1 Elite platform used the term “Snapdragon X” to describe them, but in 2025 Qualcomm added the “Snapdragon X” brand, which has fewer cores (eight) than the Snapdragon X Elite (12). AMD’s Ryzen AI 400 processors are current, though Ryzen AI 400 tests I ran weren’t particularly fast, and the battery life under load was pretty lousy. It’s perhaps one reason that you haven’t seen too much of either chip in the laptop market.

What both chips do offer, however, is a full-fledged NPU, and Lenovo is shipping its Qira AI software as part of the onboard software package to help you take notes. You may not like so-called “AI slop,” but Qira does offer automated transcription as well as RAG document analysis, where you can upload a document and then ask questions about it. Finally, you can ask Qira to write for you, based upon what the software knows of your style. I wouldn’t use Qira to write for me, but to transcribe? Sure.

Since the Vibe is a consumer platform, the most noticeable feature is the new colorways: Chill Blue, Zen Green, Spicy Gold, Radiant Coral, Dreamy Violet, Lowkey Grey, and Moody Blue. They’re attractive and eye-catching, a far cry from the very functional basic black of the business ThinkPads. Another twist: You’ll be able to mix and match keycaps in those colors, too.

The Vibe series is uniformly based upon OLED, with the 14-inch models topping out at 1920×1200 resolutions and the 15-inch options equating to a “2.1K” display. All are 100 percent DCI-P3 compatible, with touch options. The 14-inch models weigh about 2.87 pounds, while the 15-inch models weigh 3.31 pounds.

Memory options — a key limiter in 2026 — will vary, too. All of the Ryzen laptops are upgradable, with up to 32GB of DRAM available. The Snapdragon X versions, with their integrated memory, are not — you’re left with choices up to 24GB, but they can’t be adjusted. Storage options are identical, with up to 1TB of storage. I was also a little surprised to see the Ryzen AI 400 laptops shipping with either 50Wh or 65Wh battery options, while the Snapdragon laptops were limited to 50Wh versions.

All of the laptops appear to share the same port combination: two 5Gbps USB-A ports, two 5Gbps USB-C ports, microSD, audio, and an HDMI 1.4 port. There is no Ethernet jack. All of the laptops use WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.

I had a chance to touch and feel the laptops at a press event in advance of IFA, and they’re fine. The real answers will lie in the intersection of their price and performance. It’s still a tough question to answer until the Ideapad Vibes begin shipping in October (AMD’s Ryzen AI 400) and November (the Qualcomm Snapdragon X).
