Avengers: Doomsday’s plot centers on the concept of multiversal incursions, where one reality collides with another, potentially wiping out both. However, this concept originated in the pages of Avengers, in the storyline “Time Runs Out.” This story preceded Marvel’s 2015 Secret Wars event comic. Recently, Marvel announced a return to the era of incursions for a new set of one-shots. One of them was X-Men ’92: Incursions, but no details were given about the context. Now, Marvel has announced (via IGN) that this series will feature the ’90s classic X-Men: The Animated Series team battling the 2000s-era mutants of X-Men: Evolution.

X-Men ‘92 Vs. X-Men: Evolution! The X-Men of the 90’s must save their world! But can they do so when it means destroying another world in the process? Especially one filled with younger versions of themselves who still have hope for Xavier’s dream?
Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, known for their work on X-Force, and several animated Marvel projects, are writing this one-shot. It features art by Salva Espin. The cover shows X-Men: The Animated Series‘ sassy Southern belle version of Rogue front and center, with the variant cover putting the “goth Rogue” from Evolution in her place. So it looks like she’ll be our main character for this story. Marvel also released further details on the previously announced Incursions one-shots, which include Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and the Avengers.
There’s a lot of potential for fun interactions here, as this story will mainly feature teenage versions of most of the characters fighting their older selves. Only Wolverine and Storm were adult heroes in X-Men: Evolution. We’re actually looking forward to Jubilee vs. Kitty Pryde the most, as Kitty never once appeared in the ’90s cartoon. As incursions are designed to play out, one universe must die so that the other can live. But this might also be a battle of the generations, as Millennial favorite X-Men: TAS must battle Gen-Z favorite Evolution to the death. We’re not taking sides, but only one version of these X-Men has a Jean Grey who tapped into her Phoenix potential. You do the math. These 21st-century kids don’t have a prayer.
