Meta is removing dozens of Facebook and Instagram advertisements that used sexually explicit material to promote malicious Android apps designed to steal banking credentials.
The tech giant’s ad removal comes after the Indian government identified the scam pattern and after Reuters inquired about at least 39 of the scam ads that were still active, reports Reuters.
The ads promoted apps under names including “Night Play” and “Kyss” that directed users to download files such as Movexa.apk outside official app stores.
India’s advisory states that the apps could access device information, intercept one-time passwords and bank PINs, and initiate unauthorized transfers.
The advertisements violated Meta’s policies against adult nudity and sexual activity in ads as well as deceptive schemes intended to defraud users.
Meta removed the ads shortly after Reuters contacted the company for comment but did not respond to questions about the incident.
India reported nearly $2.4 billion in cyber-fraud losses in 2025.
Meta addressed its enforcement efforts in a March statement.
“We aggressively combat scam activity to protect people and businesses.”
The government described the apps as “malicious Android applications masquerading as pornography apps.”
Meta has said it removed more than 159 million scam ads globally in 2025, with 92 percent taken down proactively, and more than 12.1 million pieces of ad content in India under fraud policies.
