DL Take: As someone who played this game on a semi-competitive level for a couple of years, seeing Pokemon Unite reach its end of life is a sad moment that has arrived because of poor handling by its developers. The game ends on March 23, 2027, with updates before then that'll let long-time players find some final fun and memories.
Pokemon Unite, a free-to-play MOBA on Android, iOS, and Switch, will shut down next year. The once-popular Pokemon title has been in decline in recent years and the decision to bring the game to a close was announced this week.
For those not familiar with Pokemon Unite, this is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game where you played in a 5-on-5 format as Pokemon. Your team tried to score points during short 10-minute games, with an end battle for each match that could (for most of the game’s life) secure your team’s win.
The game was brilliant, at least as a way to play as your favorite Pokemon. This game nailed the style of each Pokemon, their move sets, and how the interactions between each could bring balance to a proper competitive match. It even had a semi-professional experience, with global events as a part of the Pokemon Unite Championship Series.
This game had a ton of potential and I actually spent a couple of years playing it through its ranked mode. I’ve tried other Pokemon games in the past, but there was just something about turning into the ultimate Azumarill or Talonflame and outplaying someone from your region for a touch of online bragging rights.
But look, Pokemon Unite is a free-to-play game, so its developers always needed to find ways to make money. By focusing on monetization, they ran the game into the ground and the majority of its playerbase disappeared before the game could truly grow.
It’s sad to see, but if you still play Pokemon Unite, you do have until March 23, 2027 to continue playing it.
Starting today, October 27, the Pokemon Unite app will stop Aeos Gem sales and suspend new Unite Club Membership purchases. There are other changes coming in a November 12 update that will try to help remaining players create memories of the game before it is shutdown.
As a part of that November 12 update, there will be the launch of a special event where the developers will bring a new Unite Coin Exchange system to help you unlock old stuff you may have wanted, like Pokemon licenses, Holowear, fashion items, etc.
So that’s it, Pokemon Unite players. I’d call it a “good run” for a mobile MOBA, but this was a game that should have grown to far bigger levels than it ever did. Blame the developers for screwing this one up. It’s sad to see.
