The crypto industry made major development in the third quarter of the year 2024. With these developments, the Decentralized Finance (DeFi) platforms witnessed rising on-chain engagement, representing the universal use of tokenized assets.

However, such achievements were dispersed by the perpetual security problems. According to the Q3 hacked report by Certik, some $753 million was stolen in Q3 2024 across 155 security incidents, which is 9.5% more, in value terms at least, than in the previous period, and 27% less frequently than in the previous period. This goes a long way into showing that the malicious actors in the crypto space are becoming more sophisticated.

Hack3D Report: Q3 2024

155 hacks, scams, and exploits drained $753,094,610 from Web3 in Q3 2024. This represents a 9.5% increase in value lost compared to Q2, despite fewer incidents.

Phishing Attacks on the Top

The lesson showed that phishing attack was the most costly type with the attackers taking $343 million from 65 cases. Other risks were loss of private keys and code execution, and while there is much debate about DeFi at the moment, these risks are still very relevant. Also, reentrancy attacks which have been common in smart contract platforms also led to the increases.

Ethereum, hosting the most extensive DeFi environment, remained the most vulnerable to hacks with $387 million stolen through 86 attacks which dwarfed Bitcoin ranked second. Inter-chain attacks were also a rising concern since hackers took $89.8 million from multi-threading services.

Today, the industry has emerged with new security measures while hackers just find new ways of attacks no matter centralized or decentralized systems. This rise in total value lost should act as a wake-up call to service providers, users and investors to heighten on security measures, user awareness as well as adoption of sound cybersecurity measures in supporting the budding crypto-space.
