Nothing, a company we now rely more heavily on for a bit of variation in the US Android market landscape, is going through its own share of struggles.
In a new report, it’s stated that Nothing is set to shut down operations in 12 global markets, as well as begin the process of a global headcount reduction of 40%. From what we could find, Nothing employs somewhere around 1,000 people, according to its Linkedin company information.
For the US market, it appears that nothing will change at this time. As for the Middle East, parts of Europe and Japan, Nothing plans to back out of those markets. We don’t yet have a complete list of the markets that are set to shutter, but as far we know, the US isn’t one of them.
This news hits at a bad time. OnePlus already announced its plan to leave the US market, leaving few options for Android buyers.
If you’re someone in the market for a phone, it may not be a terrible decision to consider a non-Google or non-Samsung device. If we want these companies to stay alive, we have to support them.
Update: Nothing cofounder Akis Evangelidis took to Twitter to immediately deny claims that the company is exiting any markets.
“What we are doing is reorganising our teams to prepare for our next phase of growth. We are introducing dedicated business units – including an AI-native business unit – and consolidating individual countries into regional hubs to operate much more efficiently.”
Evangelidis also states that while positions are indeed being affected, the figures were overblown. It’s good to hear directly from Nothing, but it’s still curious to see what the company’s future will bring.
