Rhode Island State Police have arrested four people after stolen mailbox checks were washed, altered and deposited into personal bank accounts in a fraud scheme that cleared more than $10,000.
The Rhode Island State Police says troopers arrested Alex Briggs, 31, Tristan Morris, 21, Breeyanna King, 32, and Dasia Moon, 35, on Wickford Barracks warrants.
Centreville Bank reported the fraud after checks taken from mailboxes around greater Newport were washed, altered and deposited into the suspects’ Centreville Bank accounts, clearing more than $10,000 with attempted deposits topping $75,000, reports WJAR.
Transaction IP addresses allegedly pointed to 231 Maple Avenue, Apt. 403, in Newport, where Briggs and King lived.
State police say more arrests are expected.
All four face charges of bank fraud, obtaining property by false pretenses or personation involving more than $10,000, access to a computer for fraudulent purposes, conspiracy and counterfeiting, and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Briggs also faces a Superior Court hold without bail on a Newport Police bench warrant for fraudulent use of a credit card.
