Vampires are having a pop culture moment again, with shows like Interview with the Vampire and movies like Sinners and Nosferatu doing well at the box office. But where is the big dog, Dracula, in all of this lately? Well, Vlad might not have any major projects in the pipeline right now, aside from a sexy audiobook. But it looks like his immortal brides do. According to an interview with TV producer Ryan Murphy in Vanity Fair (via Bloody-Disgusting), he’ll soon start shooting a series called Brides of Blood, presumably about Dracula’s undead wives. Here’s what the American Horror Story creator had to say:
I’m making a vampire tale called Brides of Blood, so I can pay homage to my grandmother and what she loved—what we loved together. There’s always something for everybody. Maybe American Horror Story is not your cup of tea, but maybe you want to watch something that’s just like a white wine fun show, like All’s Fair. I’ve got something for you. The next thing I’m doing, I start shooting December in Europe — I’ve always wanted to do a vampire story, and I always wondered why nobody has made a show about these characters I love [from Dracula]. So that’s the next thing I’m going to tackle.
Nerdist’s Take: Expect Some Familiar Faces from Ryan Murphy Regulars for Brides of Blood
Ryan Murphy obviously loves all things horror. After all, he’s produced 13 seasons of American Horror Story. Not to mention Monster, and Scream Queens. But aside from the pseudo-vampires in AHS: Hotel, where Lady Gaga played an immortal countess, he hasn’t really tackled traditional vampires. We’re not sure who is going to star in this series, or where it will land, but Netflix seems likely. And we can assume some of the usual actors who work with Murphy will appear in some capacity, and the show will be campy. If this series premise sounds familiar, it’s because Robert Aguirre-Sacasa pitched a version of this to NBC back in 2020. But clearly, the pilot never went anywhere. It seems Ryan Murphy will finally be the one to bring Dracula’s wives to (un)life on TV.
