After two decades Ali G is back. Sacha Baron Cohen is reprising his poseur character with a new surprise Amazon MGM Studios movie. The question after seeing the first trailer for Ali G: Who Iz I? is, “Will modern audiences find this style of comedy funny?”
Da Ali G Show‘s fictional host is back for what he says is an all-new type of movie, a “documentary.” There’s little here that’s new in terms of the types of gags or jokes moviegoers should expect. Fans of both the character and Cohen’s cadre of other in-disguise figures will recognize the style of humor. This is less about updating Ali G for a 2026 audience and more about putting Ali G into the world of 2026. He does have a reason for coming back, though. Here’s the official synopsis from Amazon MGM Studios:
After twenty years spent “chillin’, tokin’ and bonin’”, Ali G is shocked to discover that his long-term girlfriend, Julie, is 8 months pregnant. Faced with an extra mouth to feed, he gets off his batty and heads to America to reclaim his former glory… but soon encounters adversaries who will ultimately threaten his and his child’s very existence.
The Windsor‘s Morgana Robinson plays Ali Gi’s “preggers” girlfriend Julie. The film also marks Cohen’s directorial debut.
How will Cohen’s absurd wannabe rapper perform with audiences after all this time? This real-fake docu comedy either works for you or it doesn’t. It once worked for me, but that might also be why this feels a little dated. In fairness though, answering what type of father you want to be with “absent” is a stone-cold killer of a line. (The big puffy coat is also amazing.)
If the movie can come close to matching that level of humor this will work for everyone. We’ll find out for sure when Ali G: Who Iz I? comes to theaters on October 23.
