The Lord of the Rings fans have always known where Prime Video’s The Rings of Power was heading and why. The Second Age of Middle-earth saw Sauron rise to power thanks to the One Ring. But he did not bring darkness to the world with jewelry alone. He had an army of orcs and men to wage his war of conquest for him, and the shadow they brought looms over the foreboding new trailer for The Rings of Power season three.
This trailer really has everything. Love, both lost and found, infamous beasts of Middle-earth, great heroes and villains, the promise of war and death, wizards of all persuasins, and, of course, the Dark Lord himself. Sauron is all over this trailer, as The Rings of Power‘s third season feels more and more like it will be the series’ version of The Empire Strikes Back. And like that iconic film, this season will also include a time jump. Here’s the official synopsis from Prime Video:
Jumping forward several years from the events of Season Two, Season Three takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war, bind all peoples to his will – and at last rule all Middle-earth.
This trailer also shows some of the doomed humans who will find themselves bound to the One Ring for millennia. Only, we’re seeing the Nazgûl before they became Ringwraiths. At this time they were still mortal men. Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have dubbed this era of the characters the Nazgnagôl, a term inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s original Black Speech language. Nazgnagôl means “Rings-servant.”
As this trailer makes clear, they won’t be the only only ones serving the One Ring and the Dark Lord who wields it. And he will, just as we’ve always known what evil consumed the Second Age. But what we’ll learn in The Rings of Power season three is whose souls he damned along the way. And he’ll begin doing that when the show returns to Prime Video on November 11.
