If there’s one thing we’ve all learned about the science of Jurassic Park since the movie’s release it’s this: it doesn’t really work like that. Yeah, seriously. Resurrecting prehistoric creatures is slightly more complicated than adding frog DNA to some blood you found in a long-dead mosquito. But if you’re still holding out hope that researchers will one day bring dinosaurs back to life there’s good news. Amazing news, really. An international research team headed by Curtin University says it’s the first to find dinosaur blood and cells.
And, no, they didn’t find it encased in a big inside amber. They found it in a dinosaur fossil.

A new paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (which we first learned about at Popular Science) claims to have made a T.rex sized discovery in northeastern Brazil. Researchers say they are the first to chemically prove the discovery of both mineralized red blood cells and intact heme-derived molecules in the limb bones of a 115-million-year-old dinosaur (Aratasaurus museunacionali). The team found the preserved red blood cells in vascular canals.
In a statement, the study’s lead author, Curtin University Professor Kliti Grice, explained what this discovery means. “To detect intact heme derived molecules in 115-million-year-old red blood cells is astonishing: this really is a landmark discovery,” said Grice. “It not only extends the known fossil record of blood, but also offers a direct molecular window into the physiology of long-extinct animals so we may better understand them and the world they lived in.”

That’s some fun science speak. But obviously those of us who had to look up “heme” are thinking about one thing and one thing only. We want to know when we can be eaten by a dinosaur at the world’s most dangerous animal theme park. We’re joking. Sort of. Obviously there’s a long way to go before Jurassic Park can become a real place. It’s just that the discovery of dinosaur red blood cells in a fossil has made that journey a little shorter.
