The Deep is the worst, but his powers are among the The Boys‘ best. Kevin can telepathically communicate with every kind of aquatic life on the planet. It’s truly amazing. Of course, because he’s an unaccountable amoral monster, he managed to piss off the creatures he loves most. Every animal who lives in any kind of water now hates him. In the show’s penultimate episode we got to hear exactly what that level of vitriol sounds like, via one of the best mother f***ing voice cameos in TV history.

The Deep assured the world Vought’s new underwater Alaska pipeline was safe. He even said he would help install it and make sure it was strong. When the late Black Noir II easily punched a giant hole in the poorly made pipe, he did more than just unleash billions of gallons of oil in the ocean. Noir destroyed the Deep’s relationship with all aquatic animals. They blame Kevin entirely for the natural disaster that killed billions of them. In the show’s second-to-last episode one of them let him know they will never forgive him. Xander, the hammerhead shark the Deep rode while looking for A-Train in season five’s premiere, delivered a profanity-laced tirade. Kevin is no longer welcome in any body of water. If he so much as enters a toe in a pond, the sea creatures there will kill him.
That message was intense, brutal, angry, and memorable. So it makes sense who The Boys asked to play Xander. When we heard his voice the same way the Deep does that shark sounded like Samuel L. Jackson.

The legendary actor was the perfect person to deliver that well-deserved, hate-fueled diatribe. There might be no human on the planet we’d want threatening us less. (Which means there’s no one we’d want threatening someone as awful as the Deep more. That’s what made Jackson a truly inspired choice to voice Xander.
The Boys is very good at this exact bit of casting. Jackson is not the first big name to lend his well-known vocals to one of the the Deep’s water-based friends. The insecure Supe previously had a romantic relationship with an octopus named Ambrosius. Their affair was disturbing and creepy, and The Boys made the whole partnership even funnier by tapping Tilda Swinton to play the sensual Cephalopoda. She gave the Deep’s octopus girlfriend a gravitas that made her role on the show wonderfully ridiculous. It also made her farewell even sadder.
The Deep killed Ambrosius, the only woman of any species to ever truly love him, in a fit of insecure rage. Just like he helped drown all of those sea creatures in crude oil when he lied about the pipeline’s safety. No wonder all fish and sea animals are mother f***ing sick of him and will kill Kevin if he ever returns to the one place he’s ever felt like he belongs, the water. We also understand why, out of the billions of possible messengers they could have chosed, they specifically turned to Xander to send that message.
That hammerhead sounds just like Samuel L. Jackson.
