The Great and Powerful Oz didn’t seem all that great or powerful once Dorothy pulled back his curtain. That can happen with movies, too. Sometimes going behind the camera can ruin the magic of what you see on screen. But in rare occasions a sneak peak at how a movie was made can make your cinematic experience even better. That’s true with A24’s new look at its upcoming fairy tale The Legend of Ochi. This new The Legend of Ochi teaser trailer shows how puppeteers used practical effects to make a fictional fury creature feel real.
This promo for A24’s modern day fantasy brings viewers to the set. It’s a fantastic glimpse at not only how the filmmakers created their world, but how they created their title’s namesake, Ochi. Some very talented artists, using some very advanced technology rooted in old school practical effects, gave vitality to one of the best puppets we’ve ever seen. You can literally see “the wires,” and yet Ochi feels as though he’s really alive in this The Legend of Ochi teaser trailer.
What can we expect him to actually do when we don’t see his puppeteers in the shot? Here’s The Legend of Ochi‘s official synopsis from A24:
In a remote village on the island of Carpathia, a shy farm girl named Yuri is raised to fear an elusive animal species known as ochi. But when Yuri discovers a wounded baby ochi has been left behind, she escapes on a quest to bring him home.
The Legend of Ochi comes from writer-director Isaiah Saxon in his feature film debut. It stars Helena Zengel (News of the World), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Emily Watson (Dune: Prophecy), and Willem Dafoe (you know who Willem Dafoe is). It also, as this amazing BTS video shows, features the work of some amazing artists who will make their presence felt by making sure we don’t actually notice their work in the film. Is Ochi the best puppet to ever exist? He might just come close.
Knowing what the creators did behind the curtain will only make The Legend of Ochi a better experience. And we can’t wait to dive into the world of the film even more fully when it comes to theaters on April 25, 2025.
