Recently, it feels to me like there’s been a slew of movies that have purported to be, in a word, fun, and then weren’t. A24’s The Drama comes to mind, as does another movie starring Pedro Pascal, The Materialists. And that’s not to say those films weren’t good. But they were marketed as gossipy, rom-com whimsy, and then they just were truly not that. Meanwhile, as the mood of our human existence becomes increasingly dour with the passing of the years, it only makes sense that there are MANY films tapping into that feeling and reflecting the tensions and anxieties of our time. But, as Nicole Kidman so aptly tells us in her AMC ad… “We come to this place for magic.” And we come, at times, to escape, to leave our troubles at the door.
That’s as much a needed result of the movies as any other. And that’s exactly what The Mandalorian and Grogu movie delivers—pure Star Wars fun. The Mandalorian and Grogu is a movie that allows us to delve into an extraordinary world through characters that melt our hearts, inhabit a place where the stakes are right-sized and never too harrowing, and beautiful meaning can be found in the smallest of packages. Here’s our full review of The Mandalorian and Grogu.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is a well-constructed movie, both in story and execution. Story-wise, The Mandalorian and Grogu presents itself as one chapter of The Mandalorian and Grogu’s stint taking jobs from the New Republic as they work to help clean up the remnants of the Galactic Empire across the galaxy. And that’s exactly what the film delivers, no more and no less; just a clean execution of its conceit. And there’s a lot to be said for a movie that knows itself. This Star Wars film does not set out to create franchise-defining lore or to blow its predecessors out of the water. Instead, it tells a nicely self-encapsulated story and spends time meditating on the connections between its characters and their own internal growth.

As to whether any prior knowledge of The Mandalorian series is required… It’s really not. Some might find this to be a flaw, given that the series does exist. But having to do homework to access The Mandalorian and Grogu feels against the spirit of the movie. The point is that you’re welcome along on this adventure. It’s enough to know that Grogu is Mando’s child and Mando is doing his best to raise him the right way.

In many ways, this movie felt like an old-school throwback to Spaghetti Westerns, Sword-and-Sandal movies, and the Golden Age of Hollywood… taken and shaken up with a good bit of ’80s nostalgia. The way the cameras panned, the swell of the music, it all created a quality we don’t always find in today’s cinematic creations. The movie’s insistence on practical sets and creatures where possible really made a difference. And it was really only in its more CGI sequences The Mandalorian and Grogu lost some of its magic. But, by and large, the vision came to life in an immersive way that drew you into the film’s world without interruption.LucasfilmAt the center of the movie, of course, is Grogu. And let me tell you, it’s hard to resist Grogu. On the big screen, he’s even cuter and more compelling than he could be on any TV or laptop screens. With Grogu at its heart, it’s not surprising that this is a Star Wars movie accessible to both children and adults. But despite the sweetness that Grogu brings, the film is also floridly violent at times. This might feel like a strange juxtaposition, but it speaks to me again of that kind of ’80s nostalgia, where children’s movies could be wildly dark but no less targeted to all ages. In fact, to me, the movie’s most beautiful sequence involves things both adults and children can enjoy and derive their own unique meanings from, depending on their place in the world. You’ll know it when you see it, but it’s a dialogue-less stretch that shows Grogu, essentially, growing up in real-time, finding his way in a big universe as he grapples with sentiments of love and loss. In many ways, this sequence is pure poetry. And you may find yourself moved to tears.Of course, a big aspect of what makes that scene work, as well as what makes the whole movie work, is the incredible score by Ludwig Göransson. We already knew Ludwig Göransson is a genius. But now we know it. Typically, instrumental soundtracks blend into the background, but not this score. Göransson is in step with the story through every single second of The Mandalorian and Grogu, delivering a soundtrack that will have you bopping along at every turn. The score keeps you locked into the film, keeps you tuned into the characters, makes you dance, makes you gasp, and makes you cry. It’s an unbelievable sonic landscape.Ultimately, to me, there’s just something that feels kind about this movie. Not kind in that it’s only sunshine and roses, but kind to its viewers, who are probably living hard, stressful lives, who just want to go the movie theater and enjoy a film that takes them on a sweeping space adventure. The good guys get good things, the bad guys get their due, and just the barest bit of the bittersweetness of life looms in the ether to give it all a bit of poignancy. Lucasfilm And that’s not to say The Mandalorian and Grogu is a perfect movie. Sometimes the plot is a little clunky. Sometimes the writing has a few rough patches. Or something too convenient happens. The dialogue can play as too expository. But, in all, The Mandalorian and Grogu is an uncommon patch of unadulterated escapism. A rare movie that’s pure fun without losing heart, character, and quality along the way.The Mandalorian and Grogu releases on May 22.
