Rising oil prices are threatening to drain liquidity from markets and trigger a stock market correction within the next 30 days despite strong corporate earnings.
Morgan Stanley chief US equity strategist and chief investment officer Mike Wilson outlined the risk in a Bloomberg Television interview, reports The Street
Wilson pointed to potential oil prices of $120 to $140 a barrel as a major drain on available funds, combined with heavy corporate fundraising activity that could stretch investor capacity.
“I do think in the next 30 days, if oil goes to $120, $130, $140, that’s a drain on liquidity.”
U.S. benchmark WTI crude had risen 78.5% year-to-date through September 10, reaching $102.48 a barrel from $57.42 at the end of 2025.
Wilson noted that market valuations have adjusted and earnings growth continues to back indexes, keeping him overall bullish on stocks despite the short-term warning.
“But it’s a correction. It’s not the end of the world.”
Wilson said the correction could open up a window of opportunity for investors to accumulate high-quality names that efficiently generate free cash flow.
“We’re rotating as opposed to reducing our overall equity exposure. I don’t think people should be reducing their equity exposure.”
The Morgan Stanley strategist adds that the S&P 500 remains his top choice over foreign indexes.
“S&P 500 is still the highest quality equity market in the world.”
As of Friday’s close, the S&P 500 is trading at 7,656.
