A survey has revealed that Trump’s criticism does not mean that people are supporting Democrats. Apparently, among independents, 55% say Democrats are focused on helping other people, while only 27% say Democrats are focused on helping them.
Dems, who are also the opposition, have been working on their reputations to look like they are for the people. Why? For the next election. They have gone after DOGE the most, with claims of people losing employment.
For instance, Rep. Jared Golden, a Democrat from a Trump-won district in rural Maine, said that his office was getting a lot of calls from people who were worried about Musk. In an interview, he said that he was worried Musk might threaten to stop getting money from social safety net programs.
However, they have also come up to support some of DOGE’s operations. For instance, Sen. Elizabeth Warren said, “If Musk wants to cut spending, I’ve sent him a list of 30 items where he could start, and I’m still open to working with him on those.”
Americans are not buying this. Only 44% of the respondentswho were surveyed believed that Democrats held work in high regard, while an even smaller percentage, 39%, believed that the party prioritized work.
Only 42% of respondents indicated that Democrats share their values. Meanwhile, a majority of individuals, 56%, expressed their belief that Democrats are not advocating for the interests of working individuals.
At their caucus’ Issues Conference on Wednesday in Leesburg, Virginia, House Democrats and staff will hear from one of the researchers who will share their results. The study shows that the party needs to do a lot of work to fix its image, and the meeting is meant to help members decide what to say as they get ready for the 2026 midterms.
Republicans versus Democrats – Polls data details
The poll found that Republicans also have problems with their image, with 54% of people saying they don’t like the way Republicans are represented in Congress. About a third of people said they are happy with how the GOP is running the economy.
But it looks like Dems have bigger problems. The study found that a huge 69% of voters thought Dems were “too focused on being politically correct.” This is something Trump has talked about and Republicans have perfected. Another 51% said the word “elitist” was a good way to describe the Democratic Party.
Findings show that House Republicans still have an edge on the economy, even though there was much economic insecurity in the first few weeks of Trump’s term. This makes things even worse for Democrats.
In the Navigator poll of 62 close House districts across the country, voters gave Republicans a 5-point edge over Democrats when it comes to handling the economy (46% to 41%). Voters also trust Republicans more than Dems (44% to 37%) when it comes to how they will deal with inflation.
Only 38% of people think that Dems’ policies help the middle class and working class the most, while 35% think they help the rich the most. Another 18% said they are made for poor people.
As with Democrats, only 38% of Republicans said their policies were aimed at the middle and working class, while 56% said they were aimed at the rich.
Dems are already having trouble coming up with a clear message to oppose Trump. Some Democrats in Congress held signs and walkouts last week during the president’s address, while others made fun of those efforts to show opposition.
One of the pollsters in the Democratic nonprofit group who worked on the study, Molly Murphy, said that the Democratic brand is still not where it needs to be in terms of trust and knowing people’s problems. People don’t trust Democrats even though they don’t like some of what Trump is doing.
Murphy said that the Democrats have always been known as the “welfare party.” That sentiment is a post-Covid feeling that Democrats don’t care about people working, and they had a very long hangover from that, which feels really important.
She added, “How can you care about working people if you don’t care about work? It’s going to be really hard in the midterms if voters don’t think we care about work.”
However, there were some signs of hope in the study for Democrats. 44% of people in their home districts like the Democrats, but only 41% like their GOP officials. This means that the Democrats are more popular than their GOP peers. In a hypothetical election before the 2026 midterms, Democrats would win by two points, with 42% of the vote to 40%.
Meanwhile, Democrats need to keep doing what they’re doing on tariffs and health care costs because that’s what voters are saying they care about.
