Following yesterday’s big quarterly update for all Pixel phones, Google has another update available that you may as well grab as soon as you can. The September Google Play system update is rolling out as you read this.
For those who missed the fun yesterday, Google not only gave us a large Android 17 QPR1 stable update, which had been in beta testing for months, they also pushed a small Pixel Drop on us with a couple of new features. Even if you don’t find anything fun in that Pixel Drop, know that there are at least 20 bug fixes included in this update.
September 2026 Google Play System Update
OK, that out of the way, Google is also rolling out the September Google Play system update to every Pixel device, as far as I can tell. These rollout pretty gradually and could take some time before they hit your device, but you may as well start checking for it. The goal will always be to keep your phone as up-to-date as possible.
How to download Google Play system updates
To find a Google Play system update, you basically follow the same steps as you would for a system update, you’ll just tap a different box:
- Open Settings on your phone and scroll to System – tap it
- Tap on “Software updates”
- Now tap on “GooglePlay system update”
- On the next screen, it’ll automatically check for an update
- If available, tap “Download & install”
- Once that finishes, it’ll ask you to “Restart” your phone
On the Pixel 11 Pro Fold review unit I have, I swear I received 3 of these updates today, all different versions of the September update.
As for what’s new in this update, it’s mostly going to be behind-the-scenes stuff that Google is constantly improving. Google Play system updates were introduced as a way for Google to make potentially-meaningful changes to your phone without the need for a full system update.
