40 Years Later, LABYRINTH Continues to Expand Its Gaming Reach Christian Hoffer | usagoldmines.com

The classic game Labyrinth is celebrating a major milestone with several new versions and no plans to take a break in the years to come. For forty years, Labyrinth has been a quiet staple of game nights across the world. Designed by Max Kobbert, the game is a light strategy game in which players navigate an ever-shifting labyrinth. And it can be enjoyed by hardcore boardgamers and younger and more casual fans alike.

Labyrinth is celebrating its 40th anniversary with three new versions: a K-Pop Demon Hunters tie-in, a deluxe-sized Labyrinth Chronicles that features a multi-chapter campaign, and Carcassonne Labyrinth, which combines the game with the equally classic game Carcassonne. The result is a host of new games that feature similar mechanics but appeal to different segments of the board game community.

Labyrinth takes place in a maze made up of a mix of stationary and moving tiles. On a player’s turn, they shift the labyrinth by adding a tile to the board and pushing a row of tiles. After the labyrinth has shifted, players move their player piece as far along the maze as they can, typically trying to collect treasure that rest on stationary tiles.

Labyrinth is an enduring game for many reasons, though I think a lot of its appeal is grounded in its truly classic gameplay that anyone of any age or gaming background can enjoy,” explained Brenna Noonan, Product Marketing Manager, Games, Ravensburger North America, in an email interview with Nerdist about Labyrinth. “Children who are new to games love shifting the maze around and discovering the unexpected results of their moves, while more competitive adults can spend minutes studying the board, optimizing the best move for their next turn . With many different approaches, a game of Labyrinth can feel wildly chaotic or deeply strategic depending on who’s playing. The open-ended nature of the gameplay also makes it a fantastic fit for licenses, so new players are constantly discovering Labyrinth when their favorite characters or stories show up in the game.”

Ravensburger has published dozens of variants of Labyrinth over the past 40 years, often dipping into popular IPs. The latest crossover game is K-Pop Demon Hunters Labyrinth, which sends the members of HUNTR/X into the maze to hunt for characters from the hit movie. “Aside from the labyrinth itself, there are 2 other components to the gameplay: the player characters and the item cards,” Noonan said of the process of combining IPs with Labyrinth. “So, one of the key things we look for when partnering with any IP, is a group of recognizable, beloved characters that can function as the player pieces and that players want to identify with.”

Noonan added that properties with either a big cast of characters or very specific beloved characters work best when adapting Labyrinth for other properties.  The end-goal elements can also differ. For instance, Pokémon Labyrinth features players secretly trying to complete their own team of Pokémon from the maze, while Lord of the Rings Labyrinth had players score points based on which characters they collected from the maze, plus bonus points if they had the character as one of their secret objectives. These twists make narrative sense for each franchise and keep each version of Labyrinth feeling fresh and unique instead of stale copies of the core experience.

While tie-in products like K-Pop Demon Hunters Labyrinth or Pokémon Labyrinth are released periodically, Ravensburger has also expanded the world of Labyrinth with variant editions. They either deepen the strategy elements of the game or provide twists to core mechanics. “The core gameplay loop of shifting the maze is so iconic and easily understood that it can be translated into nearly any format while still remaining recognizably Labyrinth,” said Noonan. “It can be realized as a card game, a bigger 3D game, a team-based game, a solo game, or even combined with other games – those are all formats we’ve done or have planned, and even if they add their own unique twists to the gameplay, they all still feel like Labyrinth.”

This year, Labyrinth is expanding with two new games. The first is Carcassonne Labyrinth, which merges the shifting maze of Labyrinth with the roads and cities of the Spiel des Jahres-winning game Carcassonne. In this game, players attempt to navigate the maze to collect various treasures, but the tile they push out is added to a personal landscape that ultimately scores victory points for the players. Collecting treasures is only one part of Carcassonne Labyrinth—mastering both the Carcassonne elements and the Labyrinth elements is the major key to success.

Awaken Realms/Ravensburger

Carcassonne Labyrinth has the same approachable onboarding that both games offer, plus an added layer of strategy that seasoned players will appreciate,” said Noonan. “It really takes the best of both games to create something that feels both familiar and entirely different.”

The other new Labyrinth variant is Labyrinth Chronicles, which raised over $2.3 million in a crowdfunding campaign last year. “Labyrinth Chronicles is our love letter to the Labyrinth collectors and serious board gamers,” Noonan said. “It is the most deluxe version of Labyrinth we’ve ever produced, and also the most involved.” Labyrinth Chronicles features a campaign mode that takes about 25 hours to complete, and is notably a co-op game instead of a competitive game. Ravensburger partnered with Awaken Realms to create the game, complete with 3D walls, detailed minis, and mechanics that evolve as players complete the game.

The three releases show the adaptability and depth that Labyrinth brings to the game table. Labyrinth Chronicles is a classic big-box campaign style game in the vein of Gloomhaven or Nemesis. Carcassonne Labyrinth is a multi-pronged strategy game that iterates off of two classic games and innovates off several classic game concepts. And K-Pop Demon Hunters Labyrinth appeals to a totally different demographic of gamers, introducing young players to the basic concepts of Labyrinth. Each version of the game appeals to different types of gamers, using similar sets of mechanics to achieve different results.

Labyrinth has entertained countless families over the past 40 years, and Ravensburger doesn’t seem to have any plans of slowing the franchise down. While three releases in a year seems like a high bar, Noonan noted that future releases are in the works. “We’ve heard from so many people who have played Labyrinth all their lives that they are now playing with their own children, so it’s important for us to continue to deliver Labyrinth offerings that speak across generations and experience levels,” Noonan said. “Right now, we’re focused on supporting our latest slate of Labyrinth releases, but the maze holds endless potential, and we have a lot more in store. Stay tuned!”
