One of the saddest parts of growing up is losing the icons that shaped our childhood. From musicians to actors, it is never easy to see people who made you sing to the top of your lungs or get lost in a fantasy world as you sat in front of the TV leaving this Earth. And we unfortunately have lost another legend. Peter Cullen, who famously voiced Optimus Prime in the original Transformers TV series and in Michael Bay’s films, has died at the age of 85.
TMZ broke this news with a statement from Cullen’s family about his passing, which you can read below:
“Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family – and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide. His family asks that you honor his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty and always remember ‘be strong enough to be gentle.”
Cullen’s voice as Optimus Prime is recognizable by several generations, and shaped the Transformers franchise. But he also did other stellar work, including voicing the titular character in Predator as well as Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh. It is not clear what the cause of death is for Peter Cullen but he will absolutely be missed by all of us nerds.
