The highway to the danger zone is designed for those with a highly specific need. It’s for those with a need for speed. But soon it will also handle those with a need to watch a double-feature starring everyone’s favorite talented but pain in the ass fighter pilot. Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick are both returning to theaters together for a special one-week run celebrating the original 1986 film’s 40th anniversary.
Paramount Pictures wants some butts! Butts in seats, that is. On May 13, the studio is taking off for one week with a double dose of fighter jets battling unnamed enemies. It’s bringing the first two Top Gun films to Dolby Cinema, 4DX, ScreenX, premium large format theaters, and IMAX. Tickets for both films’ simultaneous theatrical re-release will go on sale April 21. Paramount is also celebrating Top Gun Day on May 13. It says fans are invited to the “special event” which will feature “a limited-edition collectible print available at participating theatres while supplies last.”
This is an especially big deal for the original movie. This special re-release will be the first time ever Top Gun will screen in “cutting-edge immersive formats, delivering a fully upgraded, high-octane experience for a new generation of moviegoers and longtime fans alike.” Minus the part when Goose dies. Oh, I’m sure that scene will look “fully upgraded.” I just won’t be watching it. I’ve refused to watch Goose die for decades. Maybe I’ll be ready by the 80th anniversary.*
If you want to ride the highway to the danger zone once or twice next month, you can find participating theaters and showtimes at the official Top Gun Movie website. That’s also where you can grab tickets. Theaters will also have them for sale.
You might not want to delay getting the showing you want. With 40 years worth of Top Gun fans, we expect Paramount to get the butts they want. A whole lot of people have the need for speed.
