“Gundam is finally getting a live-action movie.” How long has this been true? We wrote that in 2018. Been a long time. A loooooong time. But now it really/truly/honestly is happening. Netflix did more than just share the cast for its adaptation starring Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo. The streaming site announced the live-action Gundam movie is now in actual production.
Netflix celebrated the start of production on the long-delayed live-action Gundam movie by announcing new cast members. Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus) headlines the new batch of actors to jon the film. Also getting in on the big mecha fun are Jackson White (Tell Me Lies), Ida Brooke (Dune: Part Three) Nonso Anozie (Game of Thrones), Oleksandr Rudynskyi (The Agency), and Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton (The Umbrella Academy). They join previously announced stars Sweeney, Centineo, Gemma Chua-Tran, Michael Mando, and Shioli Kutsuna.
It’s not yet known who anyone is playing. Netflix’s Tudum did provide a synopsis for the film:
As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course for one another,” reads an early description of the film, “they’re pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could define the fate of humanity. With awe-inspiring battles, intimate human emotion, and an epic cinematic scale, this is Gundam like it’s been seen before.

Netflix acquired the rights to the film earlier this year. The streamer is producing it with Legendary Pictures and Bandai Namco Filmworks. Jim Mickle (Sweet Tooth showrunner) is directing. He also wrote the script. At one point Brian K. Vaughan was handling that.
If you’re entirely unfamiliar with Gundam, needless to say there’s a lot of information out there about a Japanese franchise that began with an anime series and has since grown into a multi-billion dollar global phenomenon that popularized the giant mecha suit genre around the globe. But for right now you know the most important thing: the live-action Gundam is actually/finally being made.
