Doctor Strange is one of Marvel’s most iconic (and weirdest) heroes, ever since his first appearance in Strange Tales #110 in 1963. Of course, thanks to Benedict Cumberbatch and the MCU, he’s now a global icon. But in a new graphic novel from Marvel Arts, writer Kevin J. Anderson and Spanish artists Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín are bringing Strange back to his early ’60s psychedelic roots, in Doctor Strange: Endless Nightmare. Anderson and Raúl Allén worked together recently on three gorgeous Dune graphic novels. Now, they’ve reteamed for this trippy new tale of the Sorcerer Supreme. And it even features a ghost dog! Who doesn’t love a ghost dog? You can’t go wrong there.

Doctor Strange: Endless Nightmare
When Stephen Strange encounters a mysterious patient at his hospital who won’t stop raving about how life is “nothing but the dream of a sleeping god,” the rest of the world is suddenly struck with insomnia. In order to prevent chaos from unfolding as the people around him become more and more desperate for sleep, Doctor Strange must embark into the mind of the madman who seems to have heralded this disaster, taking a psychedelic trip into the Nightmare Realm.
And here’s what Kevin J. Anderson, whose work includes Star Wars, X-Files, and Dune novels, said about working on the Master of the Mystic Arts:
The character of Dr. Strange has access to so many bizarre realms, I wanted to introduce him to a dark and twisted Lovecraft-inspired story. I brought in an important and popular villain in the Dr. Strange universe, as well as another villain who has never appeared since Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created him in 1964’s Dr. Strange #122. It was amazing to play in this universe.
We have a feeling the villain in question is the Gulgol. That’s a character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko for Strange Tales #122. This destructive entity from the Netherworld only made one solitary appearance back in the Silver Age. But hey, maybe they’ll surprise us, and it’s someone else entirely. While Lee and Ditko’s co-creations from the world of Spider-Man are all iconic, some of their most bizarre characters are actually from the world of Doctor Strange. And we’re thrilled they are getting an overdue spotlight from Marvel Comics and Abrams ComicArts.
