There’s an old clip of a young Lin-Manuel Miranda performing for President Obama that I think about a lot. It begins with the White House audience laughing after Miranda says he’s writing a “hip hop album” about Alexander Hamilton. Their reactions seems absurd now considering Hamilton was, you know, pretty successful. But you know what? It did sound ridiculous at the time! And that’s exactly why I remain optimistic about Miranda’s next Broadway show. As a huge fan of the 1979 cult classic The Warriors it seems like the last movie that should be going to Broadway. But that’s exactly where it’s heading early next year, as Miranda and Eisa Davis’ gender-swapped Warriors has begun rounding out its cast of singing gang members. And it has also set its Broadway premiere date.
Two years after Lin-Manual Miranda and Eisa Davis released their Warriors concept album, they are getting ready to bring their music to life on Broadway. The show has announced (in news we first heard at Playbill) its main cast. Jaci Calderon (Fox), Aneesa Folds (Cleon), Amber Gray (Ajax), Julia Harriman (Mercy), Sasha Hutchings (Cowgirl), Gizel Jiménez (Rembrandt), Jasmine Cephas Jones (Swan), Kenita R. Miller (Cochise), Sasha Allen (Cyrus), Casey Likes (Luther), and Donald Webber Jr. (Masai).
Folds, Gray, Harriman, Hutchings, Jiménez, Jones, and Miller also performed on the 2024 concept album. Likes also voiced Jesse on the record, but is now switching roles for the stage show.
“We’re having the time of our lives making Warriors. It’s a rollercoaster like the Coney Island Cyclone, with all the action of Walter Hill’s classic film,” said Miranda and Davis in a joint statement that also provided an idea of what Broadway fans can expect. “It’s a New York story to the bone, with music steeped in all the genres that were born and revolutionized here, from hip-hop to salsa to ska and metal and everything in between. It’s an edge-of-your-seat journey from Brooklyn to the Bronx and back again. It’s a dream of a more peaceful city where we all come home alive. This is the sound of something being born.”
Warriors will open at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Previews will start on March 9, 2027, one month before the official opening on April 8. If this whole endeavor sounds ridiculous that’s probably fair! As far as ideas go, The Warriors as a gender-swapped Broadway musical is out there. But just remember, so was a hip-hop album about the first Secretary of the Treasury.
