I am not exaggerating when I say that nothing makes me laugh harder than watching other people laugh when they don’t want to. I’ve seen every clip on Earth of news anchors losing it. Have a video of someone falling and their friend maniacally laughing at them? I’ve already played it on a loop. Many times, in fact. But it wasn’t until the British version of LOL: Last One Laughing that I understood how funny it can be watching people desperately trying not to break. It’s the best. And now U.S. viewers unfamiliar with the format will get a chance to see why. Prime Video is adapting the global hit with an American edition hosted by Nick Kroll.

Prime Video has announced Kroll will both host and executive produce the U.S. version of Last One Laughing. The title is what the show is all about: not laughing. That wouldn’t normally be too hard if not for the fact everyone who plays is very funny. For those of you unfamiliar with the premise here’s how Prime Video describes it:
The premise is devilishly simple: ten of the top comics and comedic actors are thrown together for six hours with one impossible mandate — make everyone else lose it without so much as cracking a smile themselves. Every ounce of comedic firepower is fair game: improv, characters, bits, physical comedy, and sheer absurdity. But it’s not just each other they need to worry about — the game is loaded with twists, surprises, and comedic curveballs designed to ambush even the steeliest contestants. The rules? You laugh, you lose. And with Nick Kroll running the show, good luck not losing.
The show is the latest of many adaptations of the Amazon Original Japanese series Documental. Other notable local versions include editions hosted by Jimmy Carr (UK), Graham Norton (Ireland), Jay Baruchel (Canada), Eugenio Derbez (Mexico), Michael “Bully” Herbig (Germany), Philippe Lacheau (France), Rebel Wilson (Australia), and Trevor Noah (South Africa).
In a press release Kroll explained why he wanted to finally bring the series to his home country. “I have loved this show in other countries and cannot wait to get the funniest people in the US together and watch them not laugh,” said Kroll. “This format is pure joy and I’m thrilled to be a part of it!”
He’s correct. Because it turns out the only thing funnier than watching people laugh uncontrollably is watching that happen after they did everything they could not to.
