I’m never one to say that an actor shouldn’t try to get that bag while they can. I’ll never begrudge someone from bringing back one of their decades-old character if studios insist on making legacy sequel after legacy sequel. Good for you, take that money. But by the same token, sometimes you just want characters to get to live peacefully. No one has earned their peace more than the Scream franchise’s Sidney Prescott as played by Neve Campbell. She got to sit out all of one movie—5cream—before fending off Ghostface again. And, according to Campbell, Sidney’s still not done.
In a story we first saw on Deadline, Campbell confirmed that she’ll once again talk down the phone to a gravelly voiced murderer for Scream 8. While the movie doesn’t yet have a director, we at least know it will feature Sidney. Speaking to AP, Campbell said, “Scream 8; that’s in the pipeline as well… You know I can’t tell you anything about Scream 8. I’ll be in it.” You can’t say fairer than that, I suppose.
Campbell starred in the first four movies in the franchise, all directed by Wes Craven, beginning in 1996 and going through to 2011. After 11 years, Spyglass Media brough the saga back with a legacy sequel in 2022 the fifth movie, just called Scream but which I like to call 5cream. Campbell joined series staples Courteney Cox and David Arquette following The Force Awakens model as the Han, Leia, and Luke of the Ghostface movies. Campbell sat out Scream VI in 2023 due to the studio not giving her the money she’s worth.
By the time of Scream 7 earlier this year, Campbell was back and along with her came the franchise’s highest-grossing entry. It also has by far the lowest critics rating of the franchise. But, money is money and $208 million worldwide is nothing to sneeze at. So good on ya, Neve. You get that Paramount money. You have more than earned it.
Scream 8 remains in development.
