What’s always made comedy cult favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000 charming is the handmade quality to the props, sets, and costumes. You can always tell the care and cleverness that went in to each one. It made me think I could build my own robot out of spare parts like Tom Servo or Crow T. Robot. Were they made out of wood and tweezers? Yes, they were. But they were mine. At any rate, you’ll soon be able to bid on legitimate pieces of MST3K history thanks to a new charity auction.
As show creator Joel Hodgson shared on social media, beginning December 9, MSTies everywhere will get the opportunity to bid on props and costumes from the two Netflix seasons of MST3K and the latter live tour and Gizmoplex era. You can check out the page via Potter Auctions.
You’ll see some particularly fancy things among the items up for bids. While we don’t have any details on specifics, we can see on the placeholder page things full puppets of Tom Servo and GPC, a Crow in fish form, and even Jonah Ray’s yellow Jonah Heston jumpsuit. Presumably washed. Other items include models of vehicles like the Gizmonics Institute mining vessel and the Deep Hurting truck. Plus, possibly even the most exciting, a full-size moon model with the title logo on it. Imagine having that in your home somewhere!
Additionally, Hodgson will offer some of his personal collection of ephemera from the show. One image shows what appears to be original VHS cassettes of the episodes. This would be either the original tape from broadcast or a Best Brains Inc.-owned copy. That is a particularly impressive piece for any collection.
We’ll have to wait until December to see where the bidding for any of these items actually starts. But, this might be the best chance for fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000 to own a piece of comedy history.
