IT’S RED ALERT, FAN FOLK!!! This is not a drill nor a joke. A day we greatly feared has come: Archive of Our Own, known commonly as AO3, IS DOWN, and it is DOWN DOWN. AO3 periodically goes down for a few hours at a time, but the site reports that it could be TWO TO FOUR weeks before AO3 is back up and running and it will down and unusable until then. TWO TO FOUR weeks. I hope you have those fanfics saved and downloaded, kids. It’s going to be a rough time.
How are we meant to survive without our best source of fanfic for a month?! This is dire news and most upsetting. I know on my dash, news that AO3 would be down for such a long time spread like WILDFIRE. Yes, all these caps are truly necessary because AO3 is a balm for the modern world. It is a place where fans go, as Nicole Kidman might say, for magic. HEARTBREAK DOES FEEL GOOD ON AN ARCHIVE LIKE THAT.
Nearly an hour after the initial status announcement, the post has about 50,000 retweets on Twitter, which shows how many people are feeling impacted. AO3 shares, “We estimate that service restoration for #AO3 will take around 2 weeks, but it could be up to 4 weeks. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the site back up in a degraded state sooner. Refer to our status page for updates: https://otwstatus.org” And if you go to https://archiveofourown.org/, you get the message, “The archive is down for maintenance.” That’s worse than a blue screen of death.
With all that said, AO3 is run by volunteers. So please do not harass anyone who works at AO3 about the site being down. We are certain they are working as fast as they can to fix it and save us from our terrible fates. In the meantime, we’re sure a black market of fic sharing will crop up. (See below already!)
And if you write directly to AO3, this is a great reminder to save your work. Or, hey, how about checking out a traditional book? CRAZY, we know. JK, what book could compare?
Additionally, if you HAVE the URL of a fic or fandom category, you can use the Wayback Machine to access it IF it has been scanned into the interface. Not all fics have been added, but a good amount do exist! If you’re able to access a central page for your fandom, you can then click through links as usual, and if the Archive has them stored, they will populate. GODSPEED!
For the latest on the status of AO3 and when it might be up and running again, you can check AO3’s status page, @status.archiveofourown.org on Bluesky, or ao3org on Tumblr for updates. In the meantime, we are WITH you.
