Sometimes, it is okay to stop making sequels, even if they are making money. That is certainly the case when it comes to some recent horror installments, like Scream 7. (And that’s coming from a Ghostface fanatic.) And the same can be said for Smile 3, which is in the works at Paramount. Parker Finn’s amazing short Laura Can’t Sleep and the feature length film Smile were fantastic, and we should have left it there, even though Smile 2 wasn’t bad. This third installment will put David Bruckner behind the camera, with Finn acting in a producer role.
Nerdist’ Take: We Don’t Need Smile 3, But It Is Happening So OH WELL
As Variety reports, Nick Antosca will pen the script for Smile 3, which does shed a little hope on what could happen here. He did create Apple TV’s Cape Fear and the recent Verity adaptation. But, what story is there really here to tell at this point? Is there a way to keep the concept of this entity that leeches onto a person and basically drives them mad until they die? Probably not.
We can assume that it will be yet another standalone story. Meanwhile, Finn is working on a remake of the 1981 thriller Possession, which will star Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley. That film is set for a June 2027 release, but we do not know when Smile 3 will arrive in theaters. It seems 2028 would be most likely, and we can’t say that we are counting down the days until it arrives.
