The MCU’s build towards Doctor Doom has felt thin at best and wholly unearned at worst. Thanos was a presence in the franchise long before Avengers: Infinity War. Meanwhile, we’ll see Robert Downey Jr.’s face as the legendary villain for the first time in Avengers: Doomsday. Or at least that’s what we thought. The Russo Brothers and Marvel might retroactively change all of that. At this year’s CinemaCon, the directors said that this fall’s Avengers: Endgame theatrical re-release would feature new footage. We thought that would mean never-before-seen deleted or extended scenes. Instead, the Avengers: Endgame re-release will contain brand-new, recently shot footage set within the Avengers: Doomsday “narrative.”
Joe Russo told fans at Scotland’s Sands Film Festival in St Andrews exactly what they can expect when Endgame returns to theaters in September. It’s not what we thought would happen. Russo (as reported by Deadline) said, “It’s critically important to re-release the movie, and, in fact, we’ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday story that we have added to Avengers: Endgame.” He also said this was “an opportunity to create a bridge from Endgame to Doomsday in a very unique way.”
“Unique” is technically right. Some might also say “absurd” is, too. Because while Russo called this a way to “enhance the story of Doomsday by bridging it to Endgame and these characters that we worked with for years that we love so much, and continue their story,” that’s pretty damning! It certainly sounds like a tacit admission that the post-Infinity Saga MCU didn’t do that. Instead, new footage suddenly added to Avengers: Endgame will be what brings the two movies together.
And, uh….yeah. I don’t even think Marvel would argue with that.
The truly absurd thing, though, will be if this new updated/retconned/exhausting version of Avengers: Endgame is not released on Disney+ before Avengers: Doomsday premieres. It’s one thing to force us to rewatch that film if we want to fully understand the new one. It’s another to insist we have to pay to do so.
