Marvel Lays Off Andy Park, Head of Visual Development Team Eric Diaz | usagoldmines.com

Artist Andy Park, who had been the lead director of visual development at Marvel Studios since 2010, has been let go. His dismissal comes as part of mass layoffs that the Walt Disney Company initiated recently under new CEO Josh D’Amaro, which resulted in over 1,000 people losing their jobs. For sixteen years, his art has shaped the direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the bulk of its existence. His first assignment for Marvel Studios was to work on Captain America: The First Avenger. Andy Park broke his silence on social media, revealing the news to his many fans.

Here’s what Park had to say in his gracious social media farewell to Marvel Studios:

It’s the end of an era. I was there at the beginning of a unique team that broke the mold of Hollywood and helped a studio gross over $30 billion.

I’ve been here for over 16 years, spanning over 40 films and shows, 15 of which I led as Director of Visual Development/Visual Development Supervisor. I got to lead, work with, and hire the best artists in the entertainment business. It has been the honor of a lifetime to be part of the team that helped create the visual language of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I couldn’t be prouder to have been part of the entire history of this department.

As I wrap up my final months here, I’m looking forward to the creative freedom of a fresh start. I’m eager to bring my perspective and leadership to new challenges. To those I’ve worked with before, and those I’ve yet to meet: I’m looking forward to the conversations ahead.

So what does this mean for Marvel overall? It seems that the studio will now only hire freelancers on a film-by-film basis. And that’s the better of two poor options. The worse option is if Marvel Studios simply uses A.I. to come up with concept art now. Instead of asking Park, or another artist, to come up with an image during development, the higher-ups can now say, “Show me Tom Cruise as Iron Man,” and they just use A.I. instead. We hope that’s not what happens, but we foresee a scenario where that’s the case, sadly.

With almost every release, Marvel publishes a “Making Of” hardcover book filled with a metric ton of concept art by Andy Park and other artists. So if you want to see the man’s genius at work, those are a good place to start. Park has also illustrated several Tomb Raider comics, and created artwork for God of War. You can also just check out his artwork on his official website. Without a doubt, Marvel Studios will become a much lesser entity without his continued presence. We here at Nerdist wish him only the best.
