Deadpool is a pretty funny guy; that’s no question. According to Ryan Reynolds, he’s also a guy that’s great in a group. After Deadpool & Wolverine came out in 2024, we’ve since been wondering when the hilariously foul-mouthed anti-hero would make his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reynolds, in an interview with Willie Geist for Sunday Today, gave a little insight. It seems almost certain that Deadpool will be back; however, it’s probably not going to be with another solo movie. If fact, we might never get another standalone Deadpool movie again.
On Sunday, April 19, Reynolds sat down with Geist to talk about his many business ventures (such as Wrexham A.F.C. and Maximum Effort), his relationship with Blake Lively, and his upcoming 50th birthday. The actor also shared an update on the return of the masked superhero, revealing that Deadpool’s solo run might very well be dead.
“I have stuff written,” Reynolds told Geist. ” I don’t think I’m ever going to center him again. He’s a supporting character. He’s a guy that’s great in a group.”
So, no Deadpool 4, then? If Reynolds is to be believed, then it’s sounding like the answer is probably a hard no. That only raises one other question: Will Deadpool return in Avengers: Doomsday? While nothing has been officially confirmed, rumors have been running rampant that Deadpool will be back to join the Avengers or X-Men in Avengers: Doomsday. Reynolds has denied the rumors, but history shows that you can’t really know anything for sure until it happens.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in December 2024, Reynolds said he’d love for Deadpool to cross paths with one or both of the groups without joining either. If that were to happen, he said, it would likely end the character’s story.
“Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider,” Reynolds explained. “His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated. But he can’t be accepted. His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humor works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies. If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey.”
Hearing Reynolds confirm that Deadpool’s solo run is over is sad but hopeful. Deadpool 4 might be dead, but Deadpool as a character certainly isn’t. Honestly, it’s seeming more and more likely that he just might boast a cameo in Doomsday or Secret Wars. After all, he’s great in a group.
