Is there an era in history as epic as Viking times? We say, NAY! As we raise our tankards and cheer. And that’s why we at Nerdist are extra excited for Prime Video’s upcoming series, Bloodaxe. This brand new drama series about one of history’s most famous Norse raiders, Erik Bloodaxe, has it all. There are fierce battles, succession skirmishes, poetic anti-heroes, delicious romances, and that ever-present thrum of magic and myth. In short, it’s got it all. To get a taste of the action yourself, you can check out Bloodaxe‘s very first teaser trailer below.
In addition to its teaser trailer, the official description for Bloodaxe shares, “In Season One, Bloodaxe chronicles the rise of one of history’s most famous Norse raiders, Erik Bloodaxe (Xavier Molyneux), and his formidable wife Gunnhild, Mother of Kings (Jessica Madsen). As they fight for the throne of Norway, the land is torn apart by fierce rivals, shifting loyalties, and bloody betrayals. With war looming and chaos consuming the kingdom, drawing in the ruthless Kings of other Scandinavian countries, and even a powerful English ruler, the stage is set for a thundering, cataclysmic, compelling and utterly magical new Norse Saga.“
In Bloodaxe‘s teaser trailer, we see a pivotal clash of would-be kings. On the one hand, we have Erik Bloodaxe, who cleaves to the old Viking ways, honoring their long-standing way of life, rituals, and gods. On the other hand is his half-brother Haakon, who has been living far from Viking lands, in England—and there, he has learned about the new religion gaining traction… Christianity. You can see where this is going. Both Erik and Haakon believe they are meant to be Norway’s true rulers. And, I think you really don’t have to ask which side we at Nerdist intend to support.
Will Norway hold true to the old ways? Or succumb to the new? Will Erik Bloodaxe’s axe become extra bloody? And how does Erik’s true love, Gunnhild, also known as the Mother of Kings, fit into the story? Well, we can say that in Viking times, the world was a much more egalitarian place than one might imagine. So we expect Gunnhild to be a very important player.
What Is the Release Date of Bloodaxe on Prime Video?
To see this mighty new clash of kings, tune into Bloodaxe, which will release all eight of its episodes on January 20, 2027. Bloodaxe streams on Prime Video.
