Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge have gained a new feature called “Selective format read,” which improves the way these browsers handle content from the clipboard, reports Android Authority.
Previously, browsers would load all the information contained in the clipboard—such as text, HTML, images, and other data formats—even if a web app only required plain text. This could lead to unnecessary memory usage and delays when users pasted content.
With the new feature, the browser first asks what types of data are in the clipboard. The web app then requests only the format it needs.
Selective format read is already available in version 149 of both Chrome and Edge, enabled by default. The improvement applies automatically to all websites without developers needing to make any changes.
