Iconic STAR TREK and X-MEN Actor Patrick Stewart Has Died at Age 86 Eric Diaz | usagoldmines.com

The great Sir Patrick Stewart, star of stage and screen, has sadly died at the age of 86. His family released a statement, saying Stewart passed away on October 28 at his home in Los Angeles following a battle with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. His representatives released the following statement to the media:

We announce with great sorrow the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart yesterday at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny, following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter, and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all. We will forever cherish the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace.

Sir Patrick Stewart, RIP.

The news that Stewart was living with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy body dementia is shocking to many, as he just finished wrapping up filming Avengers: Doomsday last year. So the progression of the disease truly was hard and fast. It will now be his last on-screen performance as Professor Charles Xavier, and likely his last on-screen performance ever. Unless he also filmed something we’ve not been made aware of after.

Patrick Stewart was born to a very dysfunctional family in England on July 13, 1940. He grew up the youngest of three children, in a home suffering from domestic violence from his father. He discovered a talent for acting at a young age, and after a brief stint as a newspaper reporter, found a way to channel that trauma on stage. At the age of 26, he was accepted into the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he became a celebrated stage actor throughout much of the ’60s and ’70s. One of the roles that brought him attention to American audiences was a PBS performance of I, Claudius in 1976.

This led him to get small parts in iconic films such as Excalibur and Dune. In 1986, Star Trek: The Next Generation producer Bob Justman saw Stewart reading Shakespeare at a UCLA lecture. Justman quickly realized he was the perfect person to play Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry did not want “a bald Englishman” as his new lead, but Stewart’s enormous talent won him over. He signed on, and for seven seasons and 178 episodes, he portrayed Captain Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He then continued the role for four Star Trek feature films, ending with Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002.

But during his original Star Trek era, Stewart found a way to keep his love for the classics alive. He’d often perform a one-man version of A Christmas Carol on stage, acting every role, and he’d reprise Ebenezer Scrooge on screen. He also starred in a TV version of Moby Dick, playing Captain Ahab. In 2000, he landed his second iconic sci-fi role, when he was cast as Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men. As the mutant leader, he helped properly usher in the Marvel era of movies with his gravitas. He also met Sir Ian McKellen while making X-Men, and the two became lifelong friends. Sir Ian even officiated Stewart’s marriage to musician Sunny Ozell in 2013.

After three X-Men movies, Stewart voiced  CIA Deputy Director Avery Bullock on several seasons of American Dad. He also headlined a short-lived sitcom on Starz called Blunt Talk in 2016. In the last several years, Stewart returned to his two most iconic roles. He reprised Professor Xavier in X-Men: Days of Future Past and Logan, and returned to Starfleet for three seasons of Star Trek: Picard, which ran from 2020-2023. We will see him play Professor Charles Xavier one last time in Avengers: Doomsday, where he will once again share the screen with his dear friend Ian McKellen. Patrick Stewart was a once-in-a-lifetime talent. And the world of entertainment is now less without him. Our condolences go out to his family, particularly his wife Sunny, his children Daniel and Sophie, and his many fans.
