Although rumors have circulated for years, a movie based on the animated series Batman Beyond, about a teenager taking over the role of Batman in the near future, never got a green light from Warner Bros. But does it have a shot at becoming a reality under the new James Gunn and Peter Safran DC Studios? According to Gunn himself, he’s a big fan of Batman Beyond. Speaking to Hola! USA, he said, “I love Batman Beyond. So that’s a great thing for the future. And I think that’s something that originated in animation that could be a good movie.”
Now, this doesn’t mean that DC Studios has commissioned a script or talked to any potential directors. However, it does mean Gunn and Safran are open to expanding the Gotham universe beyond Bruce Wayne and the present-day. Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Alan Burnett created the concept of Batman Beyond for animation in 1999, before becoming incorporated into the DC Comics mythology. The premise centers on teenager Terry McGinnis, who stumbles upon an elderly Bruce Wayne’s secret: that he was once Batman. As his apprentice, he becomes Gotham’s new Dark Knight, in a high-tech suit that allows him to fly.
Batman Beyond is perfect for a movie adaptation for so many reasons. It’s set in the future of the DCU, so it could be largely self-contained. It mixes the iconography of Batman, arguably the world’s most popular (or second most popular) hero, with the tech superheroics of Iron Man, and the teenage drama of Spider-Man. There’s a reason the show resonated so much with fans, despite only airing a few seasons. Although it would be a cool live-action movie, an animated film in the style of the Spider-Verse movies would be just as cool. And it’s actually been pitched before. Here’s hoping this eventually becomes a reality at DC Studios.
