Remember when Marvel Studios made us spend all day staring at empty chairs? All so we could slowly find out the cast of Avengers: Doomsday? We wish we didn’t. Especially because we knew that, despite those many hours, more names awaited us. Now we have confirmation of at least one other MCU alum who will take on Victor Von Doom later this year. And Marvel told us in a way that made that interminable chair stunt fun. Kathryn Newton announced she will return as Cassie Lang in Avengers: Doomsday via a tiny little seat.
We had a feeling Cassie Lang would soon return to the MCU. I mean, it was hard not to after the special Avengers: Doomsday CinemaCon trailer at this year’s event in Las Vegas showed Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang giving his daughter a kiss on the head. We were pretty, pretty, pretty sure that meant Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s Kathryn Newton would appear Doomsday. But she removed any doubt with a very funny Instagram post (we first saw it at Variety) announcing her part in the big-budget event film.
In it she opens a cardboard box from Marvel. Inside, Newton finds a tiny seat with her name on one side and Avengers: Doomsday on the other. This fun reveal, which is infinitely better than the actual chair-casting announcement, also seems to indicate we’ll see Cassie get small in Avengers: Doomsday. And also maybe big. Or neither of those things will happen because the movie is still many months away, and lots of things could change.
In either case, this Avengers: Doomsday announcement does seem to guarantee Kathryn Newton will appear in some form/size. But also suggests that wasn’t always going to be the case. That could be why she might not have had a chair during the original cast announcement.
That’s more than fine. Not only was this better, but that chair announcement video was also already long enough.
