Netflix has put up the ultimate wall on its planned animated Redwall franchise. A new report says that after many years in development, the streaming site is not moving forward with its plans for to adapt Brian Jacques’ action adventure book series into a movie and TV show.
Neither Martin nor any other animals warriors will be taking up residence at Netflix’s version of Redwall Abbey. According to Broadcast Now (in news we first heard at Animation Magazine), the streamer is no longer making a Redwall film or series. This cancellation comes after years of developmental hell. Netflix first began work on the property in 2021. The first ever Redwall featured film was set to kick things off. Patrick McHale (Over the Garden Wall) was the first director on the project. By 2022, he had already stepped away from the project citing changes at Netflix. Netflix also planned to follow the movie up with a series about Martin the Warrior
The deal with Penguin Random House Children’s U.K included the rights to all 22 of Jacques’ Redwall books. It was one of the many children IPs Netflix acquired at the time. It also purchases the rights to the works of Roald Dahl in 2021. Both joined the previously acquired rights to C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia books in the streamer’s future projects bing. Netflix’s “movie and a series” plan also seemed certain to cover much more ground than the original Canadian Redwall TV series. It ran for three seasons on Teletoon from 1999 to 2001. It also aired on PBS in the U.S.
This cancellation might not be bad news for fans, though. Redwall didn’t go anywhere at Netflix for years. Now Martin can go on a new adventure to a place that will bring his story to life.
