Lin-Manuel Miranda Turned Down Vulture Role in MCU’s SPIDER-MAN and It Was the Right Call Ella R. Dunn | usagoldmines.com

Spider-Man: Homecoming was Tom Holland’s first solo film as Spider-Man. Though he was first brought to the screen in Captain America: Civil War, Homecoming acts as the first deeper exploration of his life and character. In the movie, Holland’s Peter Parker is menaced by Vulture, who is played by the iconic Michael Keaton. But it turns out that Holland almost shared the screen with a very different Vulture, who might have had a very different vibe. Lin-Manuel Miranda recently revealed that he turned down the role of the MCU’s Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Did Miranda throw away his MCU shot?!

In an interview with Josh Horowitz, actor and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed that he was offered the role of Vulture in the 2017 Spider-Man movie. He said he had to decline due to scheduling conflicts. The studio had told him filming would start “the moment [he stepped] offstage in Hamilton.” His response?

I love these movies, but I would really like to stay married.

The role of Vulture ended up in the hands of Michael Keaton. The movie took place after the Battle of New York from The Avengers. Vulture was the movie’s primary villain, a salvage worker who lost his job after Stark Industries took over salvaging in New York City, post-battle.

This created his vendetta against Tony Stark and the Avengers. Vulture used alien technology he had salvaged to create armor and began trafficking alien weapons salvaged from the battle site. And he proved to be a formidable foe once he faced off with Spider-Man. But not one without depth, after Spider-Man saved his life during their battle, Vulture refused to give up the hero’s identity.

Miranda joked about how incorrect the casting would have been if he had said yes to the MCU Spider-Man opportunity.

God, that would have been terrible. Michael Keaton was perfect; they found exactly who they needed… I have no regrets. I needed a vacation so badly.

And he’s right—Keaton did a great job. Vulture’s character was less complex in the comics, but the MCU turned him into a fully fleshed-out character. Keaton was able to portray the working man-turned-crime lord well. It’s hard to really imagine Miranda in that role. We imagine it might have looked very different.

While we will never know if Miranda could have played Vulture better in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel definitely made a great choice in handing the role to Keaton.
