Money Mule Caught at Canadian Airport Gate While Fleeing New York Elder Fraud Investigation Daily Hodl Agent | usagoldmines.com

A suspected money mule for overseas scammers has been taken into custody at a Canadian airport while attempting to board a flight out of North America.

The individual, who resided in New Jersey on a student visa, allegedly collected cash and gold bars from victims targeted by fraudsters based in India, reports The Record.

Prosecutors allege the scheme involved at least nine victims in New York and New Jersey, most in their 70s and 80s, who were tricked into surrendering funds by callers posing as law enforcement or government officials.

Victims were instructed to hand over cash, gold, or gift cards under false pretenses involving drugs or identity theft.

The suspect allegedly earned around $90,000 for his role and deposited the funds into a US bank account.

Authorities say he was first detained last December but continued the activity after release.

He faced a second arrest in August and was released on conditions before driving across the Peace Bridge into Canada.

Canadian officials detained him at the gate in Toronto as he waited for a flight to Doha.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by US and Indian authorities to disrupt scam operations that prey on older adults through phone and internet ruses.

Charges include wire fraud and money laundering, each carrying potential prison terms of up to 20 years.
