We’ve known for some time now that the upcoming third season of HBO’s post-apocalyptics The Last of Us will be the last one. But we can now confirm that Naughty Dog, the company that produced the original game, won’t have a creative say in season three. Which is rather shocking to any longtime fans of the franchise. Speaking to the Washington Post (via IGN), Naughty Dog boss Neil Druckmann said neither he nor the company had any input into the direction of season three. Here’s what he had to say on the subject:
I wasn’t involved in shaping this season’s creative direction, and Naughty Dog did not have a creative role in the direction of this season. So I can’t personally speak to how production is progressing. It’s important for us to note that as the creator of the games, Naughty Dog is still the steward of this IP and even though this might be the end of this adaptation, we’re not done with The Last of Us. There’s a couple projects in the works that, when the time is right, I’m very excited to talk about.
It sure seems like a foolish choice to have no involvement from the people who created The Last of Us in the first place. But sometimes creatives at HBO like to make storylines very much their own. We all just witnessed this with House of the Dragon. Often the showrunners have little regard for the source material. Or at least have little regard for the wishes of that source material’s original creators. And that can lead to some ugly creative break-ups.
However, Naughty Dog does still have plans to revisit the world of The Last of Us in the future. What forms that may take remains a mystery, although the canceled The Last of Us multiplayer project may find new life. And maybe even The Last of Us Part III. (But probably not). Druckmann confirmed Naughty Dog is “not done with The Last of Us.” There’s a couple projects in the works that, when the time is right, I’m very excited to talk about.” So even if fans hate The Last of Us season 3, the franchise still has a life beyond HBO.
