Police in Ohio have warned residents about scammers who pose as bank employees and show up at people’s homes.
The Willoughby Police Department says the impersonators first make contact by text or phone, claim a debit or credit card has been compromised, and then offer to pick it up in person while wearing bank-branded clothing, reports Cleveland19.com.
Officers say legitimate banks never send staff to a residence to collect a debit or credit card.
Banks, police and the FBI also never ask someone to withdraw or transfer money as part of an investigation.
Residents should refuse requests for PINs, passwords or verification codes, and should ignore suspicious links in banking texts.
Caller ID can be spoofed, so a familiar-looking number is not proof the call is real.
If anything feels off, hang up and call the bank using the phone number printed on the back of the card.
Anyone who runs into this scam can report it to Willoughby Police at 440-951-1234.
