The cast for Avengers: Doomsday, sizable as it is, keeps adding names. Via The Hollywood Reporter, we’ve learned that the latest cast addition is none other than Academy Award nominee Sandra Hüller. She was nominated for her role in Anatomy of a Fall. And most recently, she appeared in this year’s Project Hail Mary. We don’t know whether she filmed her scenes early on, or if the Russo brothers added her later. The original report does not say who Sandra Hüller is playing, but we have a couple of good guesses.
Seeing as she’s quite an esteemed actress, we believe Sandra Hüller’s role must be one of significance. Even if it is just a cameo. If we were to place bets, we think she’s either Victor von Doom’s mother, Cynthia von Doom, or perhaps the wife he tragically lost. In the pages of Marvel Comics, Doctor Doom’s path to the dark side, so to speak, began when he attempted to free his mother, a known Romani witch, from Mephisto’s hellscape. Doctor Doom was doing experiments in breaching dimensions when an accident disfigured his face, leading to his becoming a fully fledged villain.
Nerdist’s Take: While Sandra Hüller May Play Doctor Doom’s Deceased Mother, We Think She’s Playing His Wife
However, we think the likelihood is higher that she’s playing Victor von Doom’s deceased wife. We know that in the upcoming film, Doom will have suffered a recent tragedy. At least, that’s what Sue Richards suggests in the trailers. One that has led him to attempt to recreate the multiverse in his image. Marvel fans theorize that tragedy is the loss of a wife and child. Doom doesn’t have a canonical wife in the comics, but the MCU makes these kinds of changes all the time. She could also be one of the Latverian witches we have seen teased the last few months by Marvel Studios. We’ll find out when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters this holiday season.
