Scammers Hit Wells Fargo Customer, Wipe Woman’s Accounts Down to $13 Daily Hodl Staff | usagoldmines.com

Scammers have drained a Wells Fargo customer’s accounts down to $13 after spoofing the bank’s real phone number on caller ID.

Alisha Watford answered because the number on her screen matched the contact details in the bank’s app and website, reports WSFA.

The Alabama resident says the caller claimed fraud had been flagged on her accounts and asked for information she then shared.

Soon after hanging up, she found thousands of dollars had disappeared, with her checking and savings balances drained to nearly zero.

“That’s when all the accounts get wiped. It’s a serious situation when like, I can’t even use my checking accounts.

I ain’t got nothing in my savings no more.”

Wells Fargo later confirmed the call was a scam.

Alabama Securities Commission director Amanda Senn says criminals increasingly spoof known bank numbers through overseas networks.

“These fraudsters are cyber criminals, foreign actors, so the chances of recovering those funds is slim to none. Ninety-nine percent of the time we’re not able to do that.”

Watford reported the theft to police and the bank but has not recovered any money.

Experts urge customers to hang up on unexpected bank calls and dial a number from the app, statement or card instead of trusting the screen.
