Star Wars turns 50 next year, both the franchise and A New Hope. You know, when it first came out, it was just called Star Wars. But in the year 2027, we’ll also get a brand new movie in the galaxy far, far away. That movie is Star Wars: Starfighter starring Ryan Gosling from director Shawn Levy. Lucasfilm is hoping to make both milestones in the biggest way possible. Literally. As the studio announced Tuesday, both movies will head to IMAX screens next year. For A New Hope, it will be the first time in the format.
As part of the rerelease of the original Star Wars on February 19, 2027, the movie will head to IMAX screens for the first time ever. This will be both digitally and on film. Lucasfilm says the newly restored version of the original movie will screen “across a select number of IMAX 70mm film locations as well as playing in select theaters for a limited time.” This is huge (ha) for fans of watching things on film. After the success of The Odyssey‘s 70mm IMAX screenings, now’s a good time to follow suit. Any excuse to see the original Star Wars on a huge screen is okay by us.
Starfighter reportedly shot for an IMAX release, “with IMAX-certified film cameras and converted to IMAX 70mm film prints for release in a select number of IMAX film locations.” That movie will premiere May 28, 2027. The new standalone movie in the saga featuring Gosling as “cynical rogue” Kade Auberon. The actor and director Levy must have had a good time working together. As we learned at San Diego Comic-Con in July, they will reteam for Lucasfilm’s Disney cohort Marvel for a new live-action Ghost Rider movie.
Along with Gosling, the movie will star Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Flynn Gray, and Amy Adams.
