The penultimate episode of The Boys hit us hard with some pretty sharp twists and turns. Homelander is essentially unstoppable and continues to eliminate anyone whom he feels is standing in his way. The Boys collective are in a race to figure out if there’s still any hope for taking down Homelander or if it is even worth trying anymore. And, their venture to do this became even harder after the team took a significant loss. The Boys season five, episode seven ends with the absolutely crushing death of Frenchie, who was the heart of the group. 

The writing has been on the wall for Frenchie and/or Kimiko to die in this season. They’ve been talking about what they wanted their lives to be like after everything was over with Homelander. And we all know that when people talk about happily ever after, that usually means one of them is going to die. In this episode, Frenchie and Butcher were working on a plan to replicate Soldier Boy’s power in hopes of taking down Homelander.

He did take away Bombsight’s powers, even with V-One running through his veins. Kimiko is their test subject but the experiments are getting increasingly dangerous to the point that she may not be able to regenerate. Unfortunately, the only person who can help is Sage, who is back to lobotomizing herself to deal with her embarrassment over miscalculating the Soldier Boy/Homelander dynamic. 

She finally gets it together and the trio do another test run. However, this one makes Kimiko pass out and things get worse when Frenchie’s doppler system detects movement. It is Homelander, who is obviously on a mission to find Sage after her betrayal. Frenchie puts Sage and Kimiko into a closet space with zinc, where he won’t be able to detect them. There’s no one else at the base, and a superpowerless Frenchie bravely faces Homelander.

He says that they have already replicated Soldier Boy’s power, and tells Homelander to gargle his hairy nuts. Very classic Frenchie behavior. Right now, it is not totally clear if Kimiko really does have the same chest blast powers as Soldier Boy or not, but we will fully see what happens in the finale. Homelander leaves and a now-healed Kimiko and Sage come out to discover Frenchie on the ground bleeding. The lovebirds say their final goodbyes before Frenchie succumbs to his wounds. Hughie and Butcher arrive too late and the episode ends on a somber note with Kimiko crying as she cradles Frenchie in her arms. 

It is not shocking for one of the Boys to die this season, especially after several Seven members dying. Blood will surely land on both sides in a war. But Frenchie’s death feels like a major crack in the group’s foundation. He’s not only a big part of the Boys’ brainpower but also the heart of it all. Now, they have to finish the work he started and finally put an end to this. 

Eric Kripke spoke to us about how Frenchie’s death will impact the team going into The Boys series finale. “They’re fractured as a unit and just as they’re heading into the final battle,” he said. “And Kimiko especially is so devastated.. I mean, look, not everyone is going to get a happy ending. All I can say is you can’t have victory without loss. And I think the audience knows that in their bones. I think they know that when they’ve experienced any victory, it comes with a lot of hardship… And so every win is a hard won win, and this one is certainly no exception.”
