With Android 17 QPR1 going stable today and rolling out to all still-supported Pixel phones, this is a good time to remind Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro owners that this will be their final major update. Google has confirmed that this quarterly update will be it, since both devices are scheduled to reach end of life in October 2026.
Again, this isn’t surprising or new news, necessarily. When Google first released Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1, which is the next big quarterly update for Pixel phones that should land before the end of 2026, they acknowledged at that time that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro would not be a part of that program.
All that said, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro did receive an extra 2 years of OS update support. When initially launched, they should have reached end of life for OS updates in 2024, yet Google made a major move to expand. They were always set to receive a full 5 years of security patches through October 2026, which is where we are quickly approaching.
Of course, for those who still own a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro and have been following our coverage, you know that these phones were moved to a quarterly update schedule a little over a year ago. Google never did confirm this change, but we tracked it and came to our own conclusion. The level of support for these phones has certainly dwindled over the past year even if Google suggests they are “compliant” with their support.
Should you still be hanging onto a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, grab this last big update and then start planning on what’s next. Each phone is still due at least one more security patch, but after that, you’ll probably need to think about buying a new phone.
If you want to stick with a Pixel phone, Google will currently give you $300 for a Pixel 6 Pro if traded towards a Pixel 11 Pro. That seems like a really good value.
These two phones marked the beginning of the Pixel camera bar design, so we’re sort of sad to see them go.
