Obsession became 2026’s breakout horror hit, garnering rave reviews and massive box office success. The film, written, directed, and edited by 24-year-old YouTuber Curry Barker for a mere $750,000, made over $500 million dollars globally. It’s the kind of “out of left field” horror phenomenon that happens once a generation, like The Exorcist or The Blair Witch Project. And just like those elite horror films, Obsession is going to become a haunted experience at this year’s Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights. But according to HHN’s John Murdy (via The Hollywood Reporter), the Obsession experience at HHN will come with a twist. And it’s one that Obsession creator Curry Barker conceived himself.
At HHN, the character of “Freaky Nikki” (Inde Navarrete), will be played by traditional actual actors, as opposed to the usual scare actors. The performers will have the ability to pick guests to interact with. HHN’s John Murdy said, “Normally, our scare actors don’t speak. But it seemed really important to give Nikki the authentic voice Curry gave her in the film. So I took all of the dialogue from the film, and put together a creative treatment that I sent to Curry.” If guests want to interact with Nikki, they’ll need to look at Universal’s social media, including its Instagram Story. There, a password will be shared that will trigger interactions with the performer.
Another feature guests will be able to access is the One Wish Willow phone number that Obsession’s true villain, Bear, calls to try to “adjust” his wish to make his friend Nikki fall obsessively in love with him. In the film, the One Wish Willow customer service voice was director Curry Barker. So Barker reprised his role as the customer service guy, with a new message recorded especially for the event. Usually, Universal plans HHN many months to a year in advance, but Obsession hit only this past summer. John Murdy and Curry Barker scrambled to put together a proper Obsession presence that would please fans in record time.
There has been some controversy about Nikki coming in as a scary element to HHN. Mainly because she is clearly a victim in the film. The true villain of Obsession is Michael Johnston’s Bear, whose wish makes Nikki act against her will. However, horror films often feature victims turned killers, like poor Regan in The Exorcist, or Carrie White in Carrie. Nikki is in the same company as they are. And HHN has immortalized them as scary elements in haunted houses for years.
We should note, Nikki from Obsession is only coming to Universal HHN in Hollywood, not Orlando. At least not this year. Usually, Florida gets the extra elements over Hollywood, but this year, Hollywood got the exclusive. For once, it’s nice to see the original park get the extra perks.
