Lanterns just wrapped up its first season with great ratings and reviews, and Clayface is already getting great buzz. But aside from Man of Tomorrow and The Batman – Part II, we haven’t had much clue about what’s next in terms of live-action for DC Studios. Thanks to a report in Deadline, we have an idea of what Warner Bros. has is production and in preproduction after the Skydance merger. And we learned that there are five DC Studios films currently on the short list for fast-tracking. We knew most of them, but now we have a clearer picture of what James Gunn and Peter Safran have planned for the next few years.
It seems that DC is focusing on five specific titles in the near future. These are Savage Hunters (about the villains Deathstroke and Bane), Wonder Woman, Teen Titans, Swamp Thing, and Batman: Brave and the Bold. This is a rather stark contrast to the original 2023 lineup of projects Gunn announced. This included many titles that were scrapped, like Waller, Paradise Lost, The Authority, and Booster Gold. The latter may actually still happen in a new form, however. Almost all of these were based on second-tier, or at least less famous, DC Comics characters. But this current crop of titles is mostly based on some of DC’s most famous IPs.
Of these five properties, the biggest wild card is the Bane and Deathstroke film. Deathstroke isn’t quite the household name that his spoof character, Deadpool, currently is. Casual audiences mainly know Bane as the guy Tom Hardy played in The Dark Knight Rises with the funny voice. Swamp Thing will likely be a lower-budget horror film like Clayface. The others, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Teen Titans, are, of course, hugely iconic. So these five choices altogether seem like they’re mostly playing it on the safe side. But given the current “not always a sure thing” state of superhero movies, maybe greenlighting the safe bets is a good idea.
